If you've ever wondered what happens when marathon runners refuse to go back to the hotel, this episode is for you!
Hey Disney friends, welcome back to our podcast. I'm Jenny. I'm Emily. And here we are. We're gonna talk about the longest Disney day today. Yeah. Why? Uh well, you know, last week we had the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the longest daylight hours of the year. And so the thought was, well, what what to do for a really long day? Wouldn't it be awesome to talk about a really long day at Disney? Because sometimes you say, Hey, this was the longest day of my life. And it's not necessarily good, but a good long day is one at Disney. Yeah, it is. I can't imagine it not. Well, I mean, you get really tired and stuff, maybe your feet hurt, but it was still a day full of magic. Exactly. So and this is a really good time of year. We're like inspired, I think, because it's June. We just had summer solstice, the days are long.
SPEAKER_02So long street, right?
JennyWe are two baby and sisters of every Disney adventure, from travel with family to running marathons. On today's show, we're walking you through a marathon park day. From early alarms to nighttime spectaculars, and one last ride before the park closes. Okay, Jenny, so a long Disney day, and a long Disney day is really a race day because you get up really early. What time do we normally set our alarm for when we're doing a race day? I think about 2 15 in the morning or maybe 2 30. Yeah, 2. Yeah. So is that where we should start? Is like we're gonna do a run and we're gonna keep going all day until the end. Yeah, exactly. Okay, just kind of like what we would do, and almost like this was we've we've done this a few times actually. We've done a race and then park warriors, right? Like we're hardcore, we're hardcore because we don't get to Disney enough, so we gotta really max it out. Yeah, and I also get FOMO when I'm there. Totally. So I'm like, I don't want to miss out on anything. Exactly. Like I'll be walking like a zombie, but somehow I don't know what it is. It's just that Disney buzz that you get, you know, and it just gives you you get your second wind. Okay, so let's do it. We get up at 2 15 in the morning. Yeah, I was just actually gonna check my like scheduled alarms because I still have some saved. And so I know the ones that are two in the morning would be Yeah, I wanna so I said 2.15, but I'm pretty sure I get up at 245, throw my clothes on, and well, it depends on which race it is because if it's the 5k, I think you start a little bit later. I don't remember. We got all I remember right now is okay, what I have alarms set for 2 30 a.m. Yeah, not set, sorry. I have alarms like programmed in my phone. 2 30 a.m., 2 45 a.m. 3 a.m. and 3 09 a.m. 309. I don't know. I don't know. Maybe it was like you better be at the bus stop at that time, otherwise you are late. You better be walking out the door. Maybe that was for a different something. It must have been but 2:30 would be 2:30 would be when I would get up, and then I would have the backup alarm in case I didn't get it in case you you think you hit snooze, but you you hit off. And we also get the wake-up call that screams in your ear. Get up, ha ha ha ha ha ha. Then like sometimes it's Mickey Mouse, and sometimes it's Olaf, and sometimes it's I don't know. It definitely wakes you up though. Throw your clothes on, which I laid out the night before in the shape of a person so I could see. Oh yeah, like top, bottom, running belts, socks, like under my socks, everything are kind of tucked in my shoes. Yeah, and all there. Bib is already like pinned on my shirt where I want it. My running belt is already packed. And then what did we do for breakfast? We just like had our bagels and cream cheese or whatever we had. And then we went out the door at like 3 or 3 15. One time you got mad at me at one of the race weekends, you got mad at me because we were we had to go, like we had to, you were really anxious to go, but I was putting on mascara. And you got so mad at me. Yeah, you're like, what are you doing? I'm like, but there's gonna be pictures, and I want to be able to keep these pictures, so I don't want to look like I'm half asleep. Were we running a marathon? Yeah, I know. No, no, and I don't the thing is that's all I ever you're normally wear too. But you're like, come on! I'm like, just whoop whoop anyway. I've seen some people run with a full beat of makeup. I know, but they probably are like I guess Instagrammers. I am I'm not that it's just a judging, it's just a couple of little like swigs of like I mean like people who are getting their pic like pictures publicized. Yeah, I just want to look like half awake and before personal ones. It's just I'm right, you're right, whatever. Who cares? Yeah, you do. They're comfortable with. But I was well, I probably I was comfortable with putting a couple like swipes of mascara on the case. Okay, but it was taking too long apparently, so let's get out the door. So we get out the door and we're on the transportation by 3 30 in the morning. Yeah, we have our bagel, and I think I even have tea. Well, whatever we have, we don't care right now. This is about what we did next. So we get on the transportation at 3 30, get to the We get to your bus stop and and maybe have to wait, maybe a luck that you get to walk right on. Did we not take the monorail over when we were? It depends on uh which race it is. So it depends on where you're staying. I mean, if you're at a monorail resort, but not all races. The monorail wasn't running for all races. Oh yeah. Okay. So then we'd get to the start. Because that takes about 20 minutes or so, maybe longer, to get from the bus ride or or the monorail or whatever to get to your drop-off location at Epcot. At Epcot. And then you walk to the start line, which is a pretty good walk. It's a long walk. Yep. 10 minutes maybe. Yeah, oh, easily. Yeah, yeah. But so much energy. Oh one of my favorite parts. I don't know why. Oh the last in 2024, January 2024, I was so I don't know, nervous, anxious. I was not feeling the positive vibes that morning. Not at all. No. Oh, I remember I sat down and I was just sat on the asphalt because I was like, I just gotta chill out here. Yeah, I do remember. No, but that was in the I'm talking about the walk. But there's definitely some anxiety, but there's there's one guy there, the one cast member, and he had big, huge, giant Mickey, Mickey Mouse mitts on, gloves on, and he's just pumping you up already. And that guy is like my favorite guy of the day. Anyhow, 10 minutes, and we find our corral. And then what race are we doing? Well, we let's do talk about the marathon, I guess. Okay, so we run the marathon. That takes us five hours. We gotta first we get in the corral and we have to wait. It's not like you just get there and go. You gotta wait for a long time. A long time. Yeah. And you think the marathon's gonna because you have to be in the corral before anybody starts, and we do not start in corral A. No, and then you gotta wait for all the corrals ahead of you to go. It takes at least like once the race, once the first corral goes, it takes almost half an hour to get to us. Yeah, so you're waiting in the corral maybe for an hour even easily. Easily, yeah. So, because you're I mean, you're at the the race drop-off before 4 a.m. and the race doesn't start until five. That's the first wave of people that go at five, and we're probably not going until five thirty. So you have that. So we're we've been up since 2:30, and we're we really only start running at 5 30 a.m. Okay, and then we're off to the race. So we've been on our feet for three hours already, and then we run, and that could take us anywhere from five to six hours. Yeah. So we're like we paid good money for this race, we're gonna get our money's worth. Sometimes in past, in the past, it's been we're getting our money's worth because we're stopping everywhere for pictures, and then more recently because we kind of slowing down as we're getting older, it's more like we're just taking our time running. That's right. That's how fast these hips are gonna move. So five to six hours later, we finish the run. Meanwhile, then we hobble hobble over to the buses and get back to the well, how long do you think after once we cross the finish line? How long do you think we are until like just doing like stretches or like eating our bananas or probably half an hour? Do you think we're there that long? Yeah. We're yeah, we're I was in a lot of pain. My feet were needed to be amputated, they were so sore. Yeah, yeah. And so we sit, we find a spot kind of in the parking area, parking lot area, stretch a bit, hydrate some snacks that they give us, and then and then we mosey on over. Take some pictures. Yeah, oh yeah, you can get in the the finisher pictures with your medals. And then we mosey on at a snail's pace over to the buses. Yeah. Back to the resort. One foot in front of it. Then we have a very painful shower. So, but by the time we get back, it's probably noon. I can't do math. It might be noon. Yeah, it's usually noon by the time we get back. Waiting, you have to wait for transportation because they have the buses all lined up, but you gotta wait and they wait till they load the bus, and then so you might be sitting on the bus, but and then you transport yourself back. So yeah, it's probably around noon that we get back. And I know I usually grab like a little snack, like maybe at the quick service or something at the hotel. Oh, that's smart. Yeah. Like I don't go back. Well, or or I guess I've eaten my little sandwich box or not sandwich box, my little bit. Yeah. So that's what I always eat. But one time, like when I did a couple of the races that you hadn't done, I stopped at the quick service spot and I got Tonga toast. Oh smart. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. Well, that's a good idea. Grab a snack, an actual snack, not the snack box that has all the grab everything else. It depends it depends on what our kind of plan is. But yeah, usually like and I, if we're running the marathon, I know this is a like go hard from morning till night, but honestly, like there's no way I can do a day that starts at 2 30 in the morning and ends at like the last minute of the night, you know, like without having a nap. So you you never mind the marathon. I just can't stay awake that night. Yeah, basically, we do it like a 20-minute nap. Yeah. We just have like a little bit of a rest, a little zizzor. Just a little zzzer, as dad would say. Yeah. And shower, have a little shower, and freshen up. And then I don't know, I just like you said, I get FOMO. It's like, okay, there's a park out there. And then we go. And then we go off to the parks. And also remember that year that we or multiple years where Jeff Galway would be speaking at the expo. And multiple times I've heard him say, gotta keep moving. You gotta keep moving. And it's a great thing to go to the parks after and walk around. And it's good to keep moving. Yeah. Maybe not until the end of the day, but it's okay. That's all fine. It's good. This is the longest Disney day. Well, and plus we've paced ourselves really well. We were we should do ultraso because we've paced ourselves. We didn't, we didn't go, we didn't go full tilt running. We went as fast as we could. But it's not, it's not a it's not a sprint. We're just really good at pacing ourselves so that we can save some pace energy for walking around the park side. That's why. Yeah, that's it. It's all part of the strategy. Uh-huh. Because everybody knows that the marathon doesn't end when you cross the marathon race line. It's after Tinkerbell lights the last whatever, the last thing soars across the sky at the Magic Kingdom.
unknownYeah.
JennySo it's probably what time would you think it would be? Like 1.30, 2 o'clock when we head to the parks in the afternoon? Yeah, I think so. By the time we've had a little nap, a little snack, a little shower, and then off we go around 1.30. Usually we either are at Magic Kingdom or Epcot, probably after the marathon day for whatever reason. It just seemed to work out that way. And we do what we do at the parks. Yeah. Like there's nothing different, right? Like we do the attractions, we do the every like there's no like well, we won't go on that because my legs are too sore. We might go a little bit slower of a pace, like as far as a walking pace. Because there are days where we bust a move. We do a quick speed walk. Yes. Well, I don't know if you call it a speed walk, but we would do like a power walk. A walk with a mission, you know, on regular days. But on marathon days, maybe it's a little bit more of a normal pace. Oh, for sure it is. Yeah. And then I feel like we're also having dinner in there, like an early dinner in there somewhere to refuel. Yes. We always do a some sort of sit-down. Do you have a favorite one that we've done? I don't know if I have a favorite. The one that was fun that we did most recently. I this maybe it's because it was most recent that I know it, but going to the hoop-de-doo was fun. So we did the marathon. We went to a park and we made it over to like the hoop-de-doo at the like wilderness lodge. Oh, that's right.
unknownYeah.
JennyLast time. Yeah. Oh yeah. And then I and then we went back to the parks. Remember? Because we were too late. We couldn't we went to we went to the hoop-de-doo and we met up with our friends who were have a camper or or that week where it had a camper in um what's the campground called? Oh, Fort Wilderness. Fort Wilderness. Oh, yeah, we were with Tom and Paula. Yeah. And we were hanging out with them. And so then after the hoop-de-doo, we went back with them and and then they took us over to Epcot. And we went on Oh, that was that nice Remy's Remy's Ratatouille adventure, whatever. And then we wanted to go in Thorin, so we tried to bust a move after that to get over to Soren. We also went on, and I think it was closed. It closed early because in Living Living with the Land, that pavilion closed at 10 or something like that. So then we went over to why am I blanking on the names of the attractions? I don't know. I'm trying to remember this. Oh, test track. Test track. Did we do test track? Yeah. Yeah, we did. Oh yeah, we did. I remember Paula being with us. I remember we went to Remy's. Yeah, and Tom and Paula. And then Tom. He went back to he went to the boardwalk. Boardwalk. And we busted. There was a big football game on. Right? We busted a move over to Soren, but couldn't get on it. And then went to test track. Yes. I remember Test Track now. And then because it was also extra magic hours that night. Yes. And we did also watch. Okay, we're out of order. We're out of order a little bit, but we also watched the fireworks, did we not? Yeah. At Epcot. Yeah. Yeah. And then we went to Boardwalk to find Tom. And they drove us back to our hotel. Right. That was the longest Disney day because that night would have ended at around 11 o'clock because it was extra magic hours. I remember that. Yeah. But that's kind of typical. So we would we're back in the parks, whether it was that day or not, but we would go to the parks around probably two. Yeah. Have a sit-down meal somewhere at the park. We've we've done hoop de-do. We didn't have to be. I remember one time we did for dinner we did at the English pub. Yeah, the English pub, the Rosen Crown or whatever, and we had a we had a nice full English meal. Ate a lot because we were hungry. That was really nice. I can't and other di marathons, I can't remember what we've had. Like, but it's always been a sit-down. We've always gone to a sit-down. Yeah. I think maybe went we went to the Canadian Pavilion one time, like La Cellier. Oh, and one time we went with the whole running gang to the boardwalk. That was fun. Yeah. So we've always had a sit-down meal. We've always had a sit-down meal. Yeah. But we've also always done the parks a little bit before. We've always had a rest. So we go, we do the marathon, which is has so many pieces to that. And we always have a small rest, mostly because I'm too excited because I'm at Disney. We're too excited because we're at Disney. We have a small rest, a shower, change of clothes, and get back out there and just keep moving. Yeah. Yeah. Sit down, dinner. Do you think I know that we've always gone to Magic Kingdom our Epcot after the Marathon? For some reason, I just can't imagine going to Animal Kingdom after the marathon. Or like mostly because it's like it shuts at six o'clock. So it just doesn't feel like at two o'clock, let's go over to Animal Kingdom for a few hours because we're ready to go. We're gonna go for the rest of the night. Well, I did because you guys were there. I did not the marathon, but I did a race, I think it was the 10K, and then I met you and George and Charlie. Yeah, we were over at Animal Kingdom and you came and met us there. I'm just talking about after the marathon. I wouldn't go to Animal Kingdom. And then I also feel like I don't want to go to Hollywood Studios after the marathon either. I don't know why. I just want to feels like you need to be somewhere like it feels like like Magic Kingdom is so magical. Yes. That's not what I was word I was thinking of, but like yes, and it's like the quintessential park. There's something like I don't know, extra. It's extra marathon day is like this is the exclamation point day. Although you know what? One time Charles and I went to Hollywood Studios after the marathon, actually. But then later we went to a different park. We park hopped that day. Oh yeah. Wow, you really went hardcore. But it's not hardcore. It's somehow like I mean, we're out there, but we're not we're not like next level parking it, you know? Like we're walking around and we're we're not necessarily doing the oh, I have a lightning thing for this, and I have a lightning, like we have to, okay, this is our schedule for the day. We go to the park and we see what unfolds. You know, and you just you're there and it's like you're just going with the flow. You're going with the flow with no agenda. Yeah. Yeah. That's true. We never have an agenda. Oh, that's a big difference because on a regular park warrior day, we have a plan. We have a plan. We know there's certain things we want to do, we know the order that we want to try to do them in. After the marathon, it's just uh go with the flow. It's all bonus, it's all just great. It's a bonus, yeah. And we always wear our medals. Yes. And that's fun. Shirts, race shirts. And our race shirts. Yes, we're those people. And you know what? Whatever, you do you. We're wearing the medals because I'm not wearing it around town otherwise. What else am I gonna wear it? And it's so fun, like the cast members will congratulate you and you know, yeah, I did that. Thank you. Yeah. Or even just random people, other other guests. Yeah. Yeah. It's nice to be recognized. Yeah. So dinner, sit-down meal. We've done a few different things. We have our favorites, and I do I do like doing the hoop-de-doo after the marathon. I remember not you say that. Well, we've only done it once, but it was I've done it twice. Oh, okay. The time that I went to run the did I do the dopey? I did, I did the dopey. Charlie was nine months old. Remember, that was the time I had to defer back in the day when you were allowed to defer.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
JennyBecause I was pregnant, and so I ran it the next year, and I did the dopey. But after the marathon, uh Charlie and George and Charlie's dad and I went to the hoop-de-doo. That was a long time ago. And just to so people aren't confused, because I went with when you had to defer, I went with Charles. And yes, there's two Charlies in our lives. One who's older, my age, and one who's your son. My son. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that's true. I didn't think of that. Anyways. Um and then so we've always stayed in the parks. Like we've always stayed for a long day. Yeah. And we've done the fireworks. Yeah. And the shop. Because we don't have to get up early the next day. We like, and if we're doing the dopey, we're used to getting up at 2 30 in the morning. So we have a sleeping day the next day, so you might as well stay for the fireworks. One time I went with George and Lily when they were 12 and 13 years old, and it was the Time that we I actually booked the Polynesian because it wasn't as expensive as the others, because it was undergoing a major renovation. And the for what whatever reason their prices-I mean, it was not cheap, but it was really a lot less than the others. And we stayed there and we got there. Our flight had been delayed and whatever, whatever. And we didn't get there till 10 o'clock at night. And I went to check in at the front desk, and this was I I can't remember what year it was right now, but we got pixie dusted to the club level. Whoa. I know. And so I just remember that time was a really special, it was really exciting. And they told me, Oh, you're in this the the club level at Polynesian has a certain name, and I can't remember the name of it now. The King Kakamaka, I forget. Oh, but whatever it is. Hamaha or whatever it is. And so we went to this building. I was like, I didn't know what it was. I don't know why we're doing it. Oh, okay. That's nice. She's like, Oh, you're staying in this building. And I was like, okay, that's just, you know, Disney cast member being positive and welcoming and whatever. And so we found our way to it. And then you needed to use your magic band to get in. And I thought, oh, that's weird because the last time I stayed here, I didn't have to do this. And so, whatever, probably things have changed, security, whatever. I don't know. So then we went in, and there were three concierge desks in the building, and we went to our room. It was late and we went to bed. And the next day I had to get up early to go to the uh race expo to get my race kit. And I left George and Charlie and I went and I came back in. And I thought, I'm just gonna ask, like, why is this building different? And I sat down at the concierge desk and I said, Can you tell me about this building? And she said, Oh, all about King the history of King Kamaha, whatever. Kamaha Maha. Oh, I forget what it is, doesn't matter. And so I'm like, Oh, that's really nice, but why do I need to use my magic band to get in? And she said, Oh, you're on the club level. And then she proceeded to tell me all the things about it. And then I thought there had been a mistake, and that's it. You're gonna get charged for that? I know, and I was like, Oh my god, I I I can't I can't pay for this. Like I I paid the lowest price room that I could possibly get. And then I went in the in the back to the room and I went to George and Lily. I'm like, oh my god, you guys, we're on the club level. I'm jumping on the bed and like it was really fun. Anyways, that time I ran the marathon, and then George and Lily and I did the parks hard for the rest of the day. Same kind of schedule. Came back, showered, snacked, a little bit of a rest, and then go. And we had dinner that night at the place at the Japan Pavilion in Epcot. And we Oh yeah, we've done that before. And we sat and looked out over the fireworks that night. That was really fun. Too. So are you looking that up? I can't remember. I can't remember much these days as far as names go. It's just like, I'll have it, and then it totally escapes me. The uh Tepanito. Tepanito is where we had dinner. Yeah. I just couldn't remember. I had to look it up. I'm gonna remember the name of that one. Yeah. That's where they like cook right at you. No, it's the regular restaurant, so we can get sushi and stuff like that. So is there anything else we need to say about our longest day? And we make it to the fireworks and then we're still going. We're still shopping. We're just running on pure adrenaline and Disney magic. And we're going to shopping, yeah. So after the because I don't like the whole like once the fireworks are over, and then there's like the mad rush to get out, and you know the everybody so I figure let's just take our time. So we'll stop at the Emporium, look at things and mosey on out. Yeah. Let the crowds clear out a bit and then crash. And then I think we crash and we crash pretty hard. Yeah. But but you know what? I don't like it's not like a big sleep in day the next day. No. I mean sleep in. You don't have to get up at two o'clock in the morning. I mean, I don't think we're rope dropping either, but no, no, but it's not like get up at noon or anything. It's yeah. It's just normal. I think it's just normal. And that is a long day, which is a great day. It's kind of like two days in one, really. Yeah. Because there's marathon day and there's a park day. Yeah. All combined in all combined. We're really getting our money's worth that. That's right. I know. So some days, kind of like summer solstice with uh daylight hours, not all long days are long. Like, there's always such a negative connotation to it. Oh, it's such a long day. Right? But this is a long day. Like that is that is a long day, and it's a good day. It's extra magic. Yeah, yeah, totally. It's a great, big, beautiful day. Oh, and it's a time for a great big beautiful update.
SPEAKER_00There's a great big beautiful tomorrow. Shining at the end of every day. There's a great big beautiful tomorrow. And tomorrow's just a dream away.
JennyAmazing. What's your great big beautiful update? And my update this week that is so great is that I got exempt from a class. And so that means that I don't have a class on Fridays anymore. And I have Fridays off. Perfect timing for summertime. Yes. Long weekend every week. And busy time because I'm uh working hard on the puppet festival. And I hear you're making you're you're going home later to build puppets and missions to make puppets. It's just been there's been a lot on my plate. A lot, a lot. My calendar is completely full. And booking into August. I am literally totally like if you want to see me or call me, you better like look at three or four weeks down the road. It's just the stress of having like so many things on my plate. It's nice to have it alleviated because that chorus is gone, the work that was associated with it is done. Like bit by bit, the things that I've had, the obligations that I've had are starting to go. And so yeah, it feels really good. A little bit more breathing room. Yeah. A little more wiggle room. So that because all these things that are on your plate, you really enjoy doing. Oh, it's all stuff I want to do. It's just all happening at the same time. And when I feel like, oh, I'm really like literally burning the candle at both ends, and I'm up until one in the morning, and then I get up at six o'clock and I didn't get enough sleep. And I feel like I'm really starting to drown under everything. Then I just go, look, it's I know that this is short. This is a this is two shall pass. I know it has an end. I can see the end of the tunnel, so I'll be fine. So yeah, anyways, that's one last thing. It's good. What's your update? Okay, well, I'm gonna live vicariously through others. So it's the end of the school year, and we just had oh, I'm officially school for summer. Not forever, but for summer, yes. Okay, so we have finished the school year, and the last day is our commencement or graduation ceremonies. And so this is me living vicariously through my students, but it's always really exciting. The great big beautiful tomorrow, it's really a nod. I'm really looking forward to their futures because there's some pretty cool stuff. Like when they when the graduates go across to get their diploma, what our school does is we read off like some of their accomplishments and like certificates and things like that, but also like what their plans are for next year, like what if they're heading to university, college, workplace, or traveling, or whatever. And so you sit there in the audience and you just hear like, well, and some of them already knew what they had were planning on doing, but it's just a really cool reminder. Like, there's gonna be future pilots and healthcare professionals and educators, and hopefully an Olympian. And I and I mean it, there could be an Olympian in the future from this group. And it's just it's all I just think it's really exciting. Like one fella is heading off in October to basic training for the military. A little bit scary as a for but but exciting. And and others are taking a year off to travel, like some are moving to out west to do some adventure skiing. And I don't know, I just like I'm I'm so excited for them. So my great big beautiful tomorrow is just really like watching them get their great big beautiful tomorrow. So I really hope that's all right. Yeah, what they're doing in their lives. It's fun to live vicariously through them, and it's nice to see them going off and spreading their wings and like the world really is their oyster, and so it's yeah, yeah. That's really so it's pretty exciting times for them. And I'm just really proud because there's some really cool kids in that in that group, and and I I actually should mention a bunch of them are gonna go into the trades, and I'm thinking, yes, because I now know you, and now when I because it's really hard to get good trades. Well, it's just hard. Like, like there's not enough trades people out there. So it's I'm glad to know people who are gonna go into that. Like, yes, put that on my Rolodex. That's great. I do not have a Rolodex. The Rolodex in your brain. Yes. Great, great, big, beautiful updates. That's it for this episode of Rope Drop and Run. Join us next time.
